Salkantay is the highest peak of the
Cordillera called Vilcabamba mountain range and it is located in the Southern
of Peru, about 60 Km / 40 miles northwest of Cusco city. Salkantay is the 38th
highest peak in the Andes and the 12th highest in Peru country, and it has an
elevation of 6,271 m / 20,574 ft. The Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu Inca city
starts from Saylla Pata 3,600 m / 10,200 ft, 4 hour of bus ride from Cusco city
takes to the starting point of trek.
The trek varies depending on which route
you take, and can take between 4 and 6 days hike. The most popular route is
used by trekking companies’ heads north side, then west around the west side of
the mountain, over Salcantay Pass at 4650 m / 15,088 ft and It continues as far
as the settlement of La Playa, where local buses usually make the connection to
Santa Teresa town. From here the trekkers walk towards Hydro plant then either
train or walk to Aguas Calientes village, at the base of Machu Picchu Park.
This route takes 4 days trek, the fifth day we explore Machu Picchu and return
to Cusco by train and transport. The Salkantay Trek is often considered an
alternative trek to the more popular Inca Trail, but it is actually a one of
Peru’s most exciting and rewarding hikes. Unlike the Inca Trail, The Salkantay
Trek doesn’t require hiking permits, and therefore accessibility to the trail
is much easier. But book in advance you’re booking of Machu Picchu entry ticket
